Step 4: Prepare the Tomato Sauce

 

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.

  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes, until translucent.

  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.

  4. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, stock, sugar, paprika, salt, pepper, and bay leaf.

  5. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes to develop flavor.

Step 5: Bake the Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Oven Method (Recommended):

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Pour a thin layer of tomato sauce into the bottom of a gratin or casserole dish.

  3. Arrange the rolls seam-side down in a single layer.

  4. Pour the remaining sauce over the top.

  5. Cover tightly with aluminum foil or a lid.

  6. Bake for 1½ to 2 hours, or until the rolls are tender and the flavors have melded beautifully.
